NYC Gap App Challenge

eMath is a web-based adaptive learning platform that provides students with personalized, appropriate content when they need it.  Teachers have control over the system so they know that what they teach in class can be found on eMath.  Additionally, eMath can be customized to fit any curriculum.

In September 2013, eMath was selected as one of twelve finalists in Innovate NYC Schools’ Gap App Challenge, which is a unique initiative to pair educational developers with NYC schools to design and implement technologies that teachers and students want to use.

During our first workshop together, we met with teachers from our partnering school to understand their goals and needs and to get to know one another.  It was intriguing to hear about some of the programs, challenges, and successes of an urban school.  We quickly realized that our missions were aligned and we shared the same passion for student success.

We continued to build a relationship with our partnering school by showing teachers how to use eMath and sharing ideas about how to make it useful in every aspect that a high school mathematics teacher needs.  We implemented eMath into their instruction and found that students liked getting immediate feedback on the work they submit.

During our second workshop, we built a storyboard to show other Gap App teams what we have accomplished, and also to see what challenges and successes we might have in common.  The teachers continued to give us feedback on how we can improve eMath and we discussed other ways to implement eMath.

We continue to visit the school and are excited to see our hard work and dedication paying off.  The teachers and staff have been extremely supportive, and we could not have moved forward without their honesty, professionalism, and dedication to student success.
